⬛ The Origin of Halloween and the Need for a Fall Festival

Halloween originally came from Samhain, a pagan festival that began in Celtic regions such as Scotland and Ireland. It marked the end of the harvest season and was believed to be the time when the boundary between the world of the living and the dead was opened. People performed rituals to appease or ward off spirits. Later, when the medieval Catholic Church designated November 1 as All Saints’ Day, the previous night—All Hallows’ Eve—came to be known as Halloween. Yet at its core, it remained a pagan tradition wrapped in Christian appearance.

Today, many people think Halloween has lost its religious meaning and become just a cultural event. However, its central themes still revolve around darkness, fear, death, witches, ghosts, and other spiritual symbols that the Bible warns against. Scripture reminds us, “For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light” (Ephesians 5:8). It also calls us to remember that we “turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God” (1 Thessalonians 1:9).

Some might say, “It’s just a fun event where kids share candy—why take it so seriously?” That concern is understandable. But the Bible teaches us to “hate what is evil; cling to what is good” (Romans 12:9) and to “avoid every kind of evil” (1 Thessalonians 5:22).

Especially for the next generation, culture is not just play. Culture shapes worldview—it is one of the most powerful tools for forming values. Today’s children are exposed to global influences through smartphones and media, and the more familiar something feels, the easier it is to grow numb to it. Proverbs 22:6 instructs us, “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old, he will not depart from it.” We must not allow our children to become desensitized to symbols of darkness simply because “everyone else is doing it.”

That is why we prepare the Fall Festival—not merely to replace Halloween, but to proclaim the gospel of life and light, restoring a culture that honors God’s Kingdom. This event is more than a substitute; it is a joyful celebration of God’s creation, harvest, life, and goodness.

Through praise and worship, we lift up Christ, the Light of the world (John 8:12).
Through concerts and performances, we use our God-given talents to encourage one another (Colossians 3:16).
Through outdoor activities, we enjoy and celebrate God’s creation (Psalm 19:1).
And through food and fellowship, we experience unity and joy in Christ’s community (Acts 2:46–47).

When believers come together to build such a holy and life-giving culture, our children will learn how to live as lights in the midst of a dark world.
This is the vision and purpose of the Fall Festival—to cultivate a culture that reflects the Kingdom of God.

⬛ 할로윈의 유래와 Fall Festival의 필요성

할로윈(Halloween)은 본래 스코틀랜드와 아일랜드 등 켈트 지역에서 시작된 '사마인(Samhain)'이라는 이교적 절기에서 유래했습니다. 이 절기는 한 해의 수확을 마무리하며 산 자와 죽은 자의 세계 사이 경계가 열린다고 믿어, 귀신을 달래거나 내쫓는 주술적 의식이 행해졌습니다. 이후 중세 가톨릭교회가 11월 1일을 '만성절(All Saints' Day)'로 정하면서 그 전날 밤(All Hallows' Eve)이 할로윈으로 불리게 되었으나, 본질적으로는 이교적 요소가 기독교 명절로 포장된 형태였습니다.

오늘날 할로윈은 종교적 색채가 희석되었다고 여겨지지만, 여전히 공포, 사망, 어둠, 마녀, 귀신 등 성경이 경계하는 영적 어둠의 상징들이 중심을 이루고 있습니다. 성경은 분명히 말씀합니다. "너희는 전에는 어둠이더니 이제는 주 안에서 빛이라 빛의 자녀들처럼 행하라"(에베소서 5:8). 또한 "너희가 우상을 버리고 하나님께로 돌아와서 살아 계시고 참되신 하나님을 섬기게 된 것"(데살로니가전서 1:9)을 기억하라고 권면합니다.

어떤 분들은 "아이들이 사탕을 나누며 즐거워하는 단순한 행사인데 왜 이렇게까지 민감하게 반응하나요?"라고 생각하실 수도 있습니다. 충분히 이해합니다. 그러나 성경은 "악한 것을 미워하고 선한 것을 붙들라"(로마서 12:9)고 말씀하시며, "모든 악한 것의 모양이라도 버리라"(데살로니가전서 5:22)고 명령합니다.

특히 자녀 세대에게 문화는 단순한 놀이가 아닙니다. 문화는 세계관을 형성하고, 가치관을 내면화하는 강력한 교육 도구입니다. 

오늘날 우리 아이들은 스마트폰과 미디어를 통해 실시간으로 전 세계의 문화를 접하며 자랍니다. 새로운 것일수록, 익숙한 것일수록 우리는 더욱 무감각해지기 쉽습니다. 잠언 22장 6절은 "마땅히 행할 길을 아이에게 가르치라 그리하면 늙어도 그것을 떠나지 아니하리라"고 말씀합니다. '내가 누릴 수 있으니까', '모든 아이들이 다 하니까'라는 이유만으로 우리의 자녀들이 어둠의 상징에 무감각해지도록 방치해서는 안 됩니다.

바로 그런 이유로, 우리는 생명과 빛의 복음을 선포하고 하나님 나라의 건강한 문화를 회복하기 위한 대안으로 「Fall Festival」을 준비했습니다. 이 행사는 단순히 할로윈을 대체하는 것이 아니라, 적극적으로 하나님의 창조 질서와 추수 감사, 생명과 기쁨을 기념하는 시간입니다.

찬양예배를 통해서는 어둠이 아닌 빛 되신 그리스도를 높이며(요한복음 8:12), 콘서트와 공연을 통해서는 하나님께서 주신 재능으로 서로를 격려하고(골로새서 3:16), 야외 활동을 통해서는 하나님의 창조 세계를 즐기며(시편 19:1), 식사와 교제를 통해서는 그리스도 안에서 하나 된 공동체를 경험합니다(사도행전 2:46-47)

성도들이 함께 모여 이처럼 거룩하고 아름다운 문화를 만들어갈 때, 우리의 자녀들은 세상의 어둠 속에서도 빛으로 살아가는 법을 배우게 될 것입니다. 이것이 바로 「Fall Festival」이 추구하는 하나님 나라 문화입니다.
